When I looked at the fruit basket so full of fresh fruit just waiting to be eaten, I remembered how easy it was just to throw it into a blender and drink. That way I could get it all in right before I head out of the house or as a snack at night. This also eliminates fruit waste. Sometimes when Nick and I grocery shop, we tend to get a bit out of hand on the fruits and veggies because we love them so much, but find ourselves not getting around to all of it before it goes bad. We hate to waste food but we also don't enjoy brown bananas and brown avocados or mushy fruit.
I got a bit excited about making smoothies, why hadn't I just done this to start with? It was nothing new to me but I had just simply forgotten.
So we gathered up our fruit that night and made a smoothie. It was delicious and filling. Just what I want for the morning. Because we wanted to start keeping these in our daily routine, we decided to shop for a bit more of a variety to mix things up a bit.
Our first ones were more or less just fruit and spinach. We started to think of all the possibilities and decided to add other things that we wanted to eat more often, but often forget to eat like nuts and dairy products.
Here is what we have created so far.
Ingredients: 7 Blackberries, 2 strawberries, 1/2 banana, 1/4 c mango, 1/4 c raw sliced almonds, 1/4 c organic spinach, and 4 ice cubes blended until smooth.
Did I ever tell you I love chocolate? This particular smoothie was a late night snack. I was getting the craving for chocolate but I wanted to have my smoothie as well, and then it dawned on me that I had nutella! For this smoothie I wanted to have more of a banana and chocolate taste so I used a whole banana to mask the other fruits and the leafy taste of the spinach. It was quite the treat. Even Nick smiled when he had a taste.
Ingredients: 3 strawberries, 1 kiwi, about 1/4 c raw sliced almonds, 1/2 c of spinach, 1 whole banana, 1 tbs nutella and 4 ice cubes blended until smooth.
These smoothies can be made in so many ways with so many things. I have already thought of so many possibilities.
For my future recipes I thought of a few things I would like to add such as:
Raw oats, almond butter, peanut butter, lemon juice, grapefruit, oranges, pomegranate, papaya, honey, green tea, avocados, flax seeds and yogurt.
My next attempt is to make some with fruit and other veggies such as tomatoes and carrots, I really hope I can get down a good mixture.
