Building your Blog 1

Since I started this blog I got a lot of questions on how to use Blogger and how I got my page to look the way it does. And lately, I have been coming across a lot of blogs that do not have a GFC, Google Friend Connect button which is the main way to follow using blogger. I had thought about doing this post before, to help out my fellow bloggers but I never got around to it, but now that It is becoming more frequent that I see users without GFC and more people are asking me for help, It may just be easier to refer them to this post.

So if you are interested, keep on reading.

Labels and Links:
When I first started using Blogger as I am Pisces, I had my Blog split up by Pages. This was a very very bad idea, because it was hard to simply just write a post, there were so many aspects that I had to add to the post including date and time, proper spacing and titles, it was a pain. Then I finally figured out an easy way to create links at the top of your page using Labels. Labels are basically categories. I tried not to have too many so that it would be easy to sort through my blog.

So here is how I got my links.

Go to the  the section under My Blogs (see Fig. 1)
Scroll down to Layout
Click Layout
Under your Header, it should say "Add Gadget" or if space is already filled, you will want to remove it. (see Fig. 2)
Click Add a Gadget
Scroll down till you find Labels
Add the Label gadget to that section

So the next thing you will need to do is start creating Labels for your posts, this is pretty simple, you will just need to go to your post, and on the right hand side under Post Settings it should say Labels. Click there and voila, you can start adding a Label to your posts and it will appear at the top of your page!

The next thing I want to talk about is Google Friend Connect. GFC is the main way Blogger users will be able to follow you, so if you are wondering why no one has followed you, you may me missing the button. I have one on my page if you don't know what it is, it's the blue button on the side bar that says "Join this site." Getting this is pretty simple and a definite must.

Once again you are going to want to refer to Fig 1 above, you are going to get back to that area, click on Layout and go anywhere on your Layout page and click "Add a Gadget" mine is on the right side bar, and if you look at Fig 2 it's where it says "Like what you see?  Follow M...." Once you click Add a Gadget, scroll down to Followers. Add that Gadget and you are ready to go!

I have decided to do this in segments because 1. I am still feeling sick and very dizzy and 2. I think it will just be easier to skim through that way. This is Part 1. So stay tuned for more help on Building your Blog and you can always refer to my Blogging section to quick access this post and share it with others.

Hope this has helped.
Leave me some comments on anything you would like me to talk about in my the next segment of Building your Blog.
Thanks for reading!

  1. Hehe what a great how-to post! :D Yay for blogger!

    1. You're always so sweet Traci! Thanks for reading (:

  2. This is very helpful! =) How do you get the Links on your page? lol like Pinterest and Beautylish...

    1. Kind of hard to explain, I can probably do a post on it tomorrow!

  3. How do I get it to only display a certain label's post at a time? I did this and now my blog is a complete mess and I don't know what to do.

    1. I am still a bit confused as to what you are asking.

I looked at your blog and it appears fine to me.
If you are asking it to only display one post from a label, it won't do that it will display everything you have labeled with "Beauty"

You can pick which labels to show by editing the gadget and picking "show selected labels.

    2. I just looked at your page are you trying to make a contact page?

You get go to pages, add a new page, then display the link to contact page on your side bar.

Or instead of having the labels on the top of your blog you can show your pages.

Go to the pages section, after creating the pages there is a small button that says "show pages as..." you can pick TOP TABS if you want them at the top

    3. It was showing all the post that were different labels. I meant how to show only one label at a time. I just ended doing the pages, for now since my blog looked so unorganized. Thank you for your help :)

  4. I wish i had found this before! i was having huge prblems finding some of this stuff.. :( ... Really useful post thanks :D x
